Mixed lot (2 items): Ethiopia: Two rare types of Ethiopian neckrest of the Afar and Oromo (?).
1: A neckrest of the Afar, who live in East Ethiopia along the border of the Danakil Desert. Carved from wood and dyed black. The conical base is directly under the seat and increases in girth towards the bottom. Its external surface is decorated with all-round linear and Y-shaped chip-carving motifs. Six carved, visibly accentuated recesses are the lower end are a characteristic feature of the style of the Afar. H: 17 cm, W: 14 cm.
2: A neckrest with an unusual form. Probably of the Oromo (?) in Central Ethiopia. Made of wood, coloured black and brown. Between the block-shaped seat decorated with lateral lines and the round base plate, the stand features two thick, wide and rounded ‘bulges’ as decorative elements. A stylistically rare object! H: 16 cm, W: 15 cm.
Both pieces show good, old usage patina and only minor age-related damage. F
