Small, rectangular, slightly convex wickerwork shields, such as the present one, with short projections on all four corners, were in use in a number of small tribes who live near the Cross River, close to the border between Nigeria and Cameroon. With typically shaped handle made of black-dyed wood on the back.
With good usage patina on the handle. No damage (only the small strap on the upper margin is torn).
First half to mid-20th century; dimensions: c. 42 cm x 26 cm. (ME)
