Ogoni (or Ibibio): A black mask with crest carved out from the same piece.
The Ogoni and their neighbours, the Ibibio, live near the delta of the Niger River, in South Nigeria. Both Tribes have a similar mask style (Ogoni masks are usually smaller than Ibibio masks).
The present mask (probably from the Ogoni), is carved from lightweight, brown wood and dyed black on the front side. The lower section of the face is offset and slightly concave. With crescent-shaped, cut-out eyes, a small square nose and a thin mouth at the lower rim of the mask. The straight, bulging semicircular eyebrow line is surmounted by a crest (or a cap?) carved out from the same piece and decorated in geometric relief (a large rectangle in the middle, and two circles on either side). The inner surfaces of the aforementioned geometric forms were originally dyed red.
An old, beautiful and neatly stylised piece with excellent, shiny and partly encrusted black patina, and with only minor age damage (two minor tears to the front and one to the back of the upper rim).
First half of the 20th century; H: 24 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.
