Ibo-Izzi: An ‘Ogbodo enyi’ elephant mask.

Ibo-Izzi: An ‘Ogbodo enyi’ elephant mask. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

This mask type of the Ibo-Izzi is actually a dance crest and is worn on a sort of pad horizontally on the head.
An ‘Ogbodo enyi’ is a composite mask created according to relatively strict formal criteria and comprised of different animal parts: the tusks of an elephant (always on the front of the mask), the mouth of a hippopotamus, parts of a wart hog etc. The back of the mask always features a human head (in relief or detached). These masks are always worn by the oldest men among the four age categories of the Ibo-Izzi. They are used for dances on the occasion of funerals, ceremonies as wells as feasts in the dry season.
The present ‘Ogbodo enyi’ mask of the Ibo-Izzi is a perfect example in ‘classical’ style. With a three-dimensionally carved head on the back and a metal spiral screwed in as neck ornament. Made of light-coloured wood, dyed white, black and orange-red. With good, old usage patina. Minor age-damage (to the right tusk).
First half of the 20th century; H: 36 cm, L: 62 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian Collection.
