A large sacrificial bowl for the Yoruba cult of the god Eshu. This god is a so-called ‘trickster’ deity, who is capable of doing good as well as evil, and must hence be appeased. To the end, he receives regular offerings on his shrine. The present sacrificial bowl is used precisely in this context.
The shawl is carved from hard, dark wood and is comprised of a robust, three-dimensional handle, which can be held with both hands. The handle features a standing figure depicting the god Eshu: a bearded, serious man with a long plaited coiffure on the back on his head. In his right hand he holds a fly whisk, in his left hand a sceptre. The left side of the handle depicts a female companion of the god Eshu. They turn their back to each other and are connected through their plaited coiffures.
A rare and highly original ritual object, with old, partly shiny, encrusted usage patina. Visibly used for the cult throughout a prolonged period.
No significant damage.
First half of the 20th century; H: 41 cm; diameter: 22 cm x 23 cm (the bowl). (ME)
Provenance: Viennese Private Collection.
