Yoruba, Nigeria: A pair of ‘Ibeji’ twin figures, female and male. Style: Oshogbo-Oyo. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A pair of typical twin figures, known as ‘Ibeji’, carved by the Yoruba in Nigeria (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 66).
In ‘classical’ proportions (large head, short legs), standing on round base plates. Both with the high, two-pointed coiffures that are typical of the Oshogbo-Oyo style. The hair is dyed with ‘bluing’. Both bodies show remains of sacrificial offerings with redwood powder.
Both 'Ibeji' have good, partly shiny, old patina and traces of wear (on the faces) as a result of long use on a domestic altar. The female figure is adorned with one, the male figure with two chains of white glass pearls.
Minor age damage (tears).
