Mossi, Burkina Faso: An unusually large ‘Biga’ fertility doll.

Mossi, Burkina Faso: An unusually large ‘Biga’ fertility doll. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

These typical, abstract fertility dolls, called ‘biga’, are worn by the women of the Mossi in their garments when they wish for children. When a child is born, the ‘biga’ dolls are either placed on house altars, or passed on to the next generation, or even given to the girls as a toy.
The present ‘Biga’ is an unusually large example of such fertility dolls. Made of hard, heavy wood, carved with markedly abstract ‘Cubist’ features, and dyed black. The figure has a face with eyes consisting of inserted copper studs, nose and mouth on one of the short sides, with large breasts, the abdomen of a pregnant woman and genitalia engraved on the front the round plinth. The ‘hairstyle’ and décor consist of confidently and skilfully notched lines. With patina and an old, small loss to the hemispheric plinth.
First half of the 20th century; H: 40.5 cm. (ME)

Provenance: German Private Collection.
