Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este - Rekvizity z císařského dvora

(1863-1914) -personal campaign tunic in German uniform with the rank of general of cavalry, tunic of fine blue-grey cloth, 2 rows of gilded general’s buttons, collar and sleeve turn-ups of scarlet cloth with gold general’s braid, red silk rep lining (partly frayed), manufacturer Josef Szallay in Vienna (court tailor and supplier to his highness Archduke Franz Ferdiand d'Este, several loops for orders (corresponding to the decorations conferred on and worn by the Archduke), ca. 1912/14, (Lu)

This uniform tunic corresponds exactly in size, execution and number of loops for orders to the one worn by Archduke Franz Ferdinand during the assassination in Sarajevo on 28th June 1914 and which is today in the Military History Museum in Vienna. Underneath the inside left end of the collar there is a button for fixing the neck decoration of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Characteristic features – as with other uniform tunics of Franz Ferdinand – are the collar lined with fine white leather as well as the eyelets which are worked in for fixing the neckband; a particular invention of the Archduke of which he was very proud. This patent fastening was possibly the reason why, after the shot of the assassin in Sarajevo, the tunic could not be opened and had to be cut apart so that first aid could be administerd to the severely wounded Archduke.
