Kashmir fabric,
France, c. 292 x 137 cm, about 1800, feather-light precious textile made from Angora goat hair woven in the Kashmir technique, large Kashmir cloths were exclusively worn by men as a shawl in the Orient and were very fashionable among noble ladies in Europe at the end of the 18th century, these items were manufactured mainly in India and France, the present piece is finely worked featuring all-over filigree decoration with magnificent Indian buildings, ceremonial tents, figural representations, a variety of floral elements on rare green background, a very similar, dark fabric was sold at the Dorotheum in May 2013, the white shirazi is present in very few shawls only, edge damage, several flaws are backed with green linen on the reverse, a very early collector’s piece!
