Giulio Carpioni
(Venice 1613–1678 Verona)
Putti, playing in a landscape,
oil on canvas, 55,5 x 43,5 cm, framed
We are grateful to Bernard Aikema for confirming the attribution on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.
The present painting is a typical work by Giulio Carpioni, Venetian painter and student of Padovanino. Putti at play in a landscape setting are a recurring motif in Carpioni’s œuvre, eg. the figure of the putto lying on its belly, as well as the ruins and ancient statues in the Triumph of Silenus (Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice, Inv. No. 179224). The putto lying on its front also appears in another painting by this painter, previously in the Collection Sabatello in Rome (depicted in a photograph Fototeca Hertziana, Rome, No. 212049).
