The present painting is accompanied by an expert report by E. Bernt (1990).

Willem van Mieris, who studied with his father Frans van Mieris, was one of the last proponents of Leiden fine painting. Most of his work consists of small-format interiors with vegetable- or poultry merchants, or with people playing music. His elegant ladies are distinguished by their small heads and their bodies shaped in keeping with the academic beauty ideals of the period.
