Ernst Christian Moser was born 1815 in Graz as a son of a clock and watch maker. In 1828 he enrolled at the Viennese Academy where he was taught by Johann Ender, Josef Mössmer, Ferdinand Waldmüller and Leopold Kupelwieser. During his studies he already won prices and obtained scholarships. In 1840 he started teaching at the Landeskunstschule in Graz. Though he also painted historical scenes he was known mainly for his very sensitive way of painting portraits and genre scenes.
