August Alexius Canzi
(Baden near Vienna 1808–1866 Budapest)
Portrait of a Lady in Elegant Dress, signed, inscribed, dated Canzi Paris 1835, oil on canvas, 117 x 89 cm, framed, (GG)
August Canzi grew up in Baden near Vienna. He moved to Paris in 1833 where he studied under Jean-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867). Upon his return to Vienna in 1840 he became one of the best Austro-Hungarian Biedermeier portraits painters. Then he lived in Budapest from 1846 to his death in 1866. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1833.
Though we are unable to identify the sitter the present lot is executed with precision. Based on the woman’s costume it can be dated to 1835. It is usual for the period to paint a large-scale portrait.
The present painting displays the sitter seated. She is shown in three-quarter length. Even though the painting is executed in Paris the sitter seems to be Austro-Hungarian rather than French. She is gazing directly at the viewer creating a sense of interaction with the observer.
The clothing is well finished. She is shown in front of a rich green background.
