colourless glass, casing in copper ruby colour, faceted sides with octagonal opening, wide and fine gold edges, stepped shoulder slightly rounded body narrowing with rich, gold-painted band of mauresques, smooth base faceted 16-fold, flattened, arch-shaped golden handle with cut, stylised animal heads, height 87 cm, Neuwelt, Bohemia, early twentieth century (Ru)
Lit.: Passauer Glasmuseum, Das Böhmische Glas, 1700–1950, Volume III, p. 34, 35, fig. III. 26; Influenced by the general interest in Arabic crafts, the porcellain factory Sèvres in an exhibition in Paris in 1842 showed two “Alhambra” vases. Their shape and decoration corresponded to an Islamic vase from the fifteenth century on display in a museum in Granada. Glass producers, especially those from Bohemia, copied this idea and probably procured copies of the „Alhambra“ vase, which Sèvres had re-produced in 1848/49. Large, red vases with gold band of mauresques were exhibited at the world fair in Paris in 1855 by the Harrach hut as well as by Franz Steigerwald in Munich.
Lit. see: W. Neuwirth, Schöner als Bergkristall, Ludwig Lobmeyr, Vienna 1999, p. 152, fig. 373 paper cut, Steigerwald, Munich, around 1845/50;
