Herbert Brandl *

(born in Graz in 1959) Untitled, 1982, on the reverse monogrammed HB, oil on molino (central segment), plywood (sides), overall dimensions 90 x 126 cm, (K)

Provenance: Private Ownership, Vienna ...

“Abstract paintings are fictitious models, as they illustrate a reality that we can neither see nor describe, the existence of which we can nonetheless postulate. We refer to this reality with negative concepts, such as the ‘unknown’, the ‘unintelligible’, the ‘endless’, and represented it for thousands of years by means of surrogate images with heaven and hell, gods and devils. With abstract paintings we have created a better way of dealing with the indistinct and the incomprehensible, since they depict “nothing” with the most direct clarity, with all artistic means. Accustomed to recognising real objects in paintings, we rightly refuse to accept that only colour (in all its variety) is represented and instead allow ourselves to see the indistinct, that which was seen previously and is not visible.
