Japan, Meiji period. Bronze, greenish-brown patina, some parts burnished and gilded. Signed: Ikkô. The figure seated behind an unfinished barrel, a plane in his hands, gazing up through the circular barrel at the viewer. Alongside him a hammer in a crate, a bird sitting on top of the barrel. Verso in seal script the sign ho, probably the name of the craftsman’s guild. Height: 15.4 cm. (BA)
There is a similar image in a woodcut by Katsushika Hokusai, part of the series, ‘36 view of Fuji’, title: ‘Fujimigahara’ (the fields with a view of Mount Fuji in the province of Owari), dated 1830–1834, now held at the Honolulu Museum of Art, object no. 21944.
