The sitter is Archduke Ferdinand Charles of Tyrol (1628-1662). The painting is based on the large equestrian portrait of the Archduke painted after 1653 by Justus Sustermans and Francesco Montelatici, called Cecco Bravo, in Ambras Castle (see the Collection Guide Meisterwerke der Sammlungen Schloss Ambras 2008, p. 60-61 no. 19).
