…Cindy Sherman says of herself that, ‘the energy I expend in the otherwise feigned feelings, as well as the actual staging of my photos, leaves me truly exhausted, completely drained. The only way I can maintain an objective stance towards the figures I portray is to distance myself physically from my activities… I am really only completely myself when I’m totally alone. I regard my life as a practice ground, as a stage for rehearsals, because I’m constantly pretending; I play certain roles in front of certain people, to achieve something the way I want it, or to get the people to behave towards me as I wish them to’ (1982, cited in Stockebrand 1985).
