Pistoletto began making his Quadri specchianti (Mirror Paintings) in 1961. These works were initially made by applying cut – out painted tissue-paper images of people or objects onto polished stainless steel surfaces. Later he used photographic enlargements silkscreened onto steel, as in the work pictured here. This mirror – painting is depicting Maria, his life long companion and artistic collaborator.
