This sketch and the one that follows depict the final design for the fresco that Severini executed in around 1940 at Villa Innocenti in Frascati near Rome. The fresco comprises three panels with classical, pastoral figures painted in egg tempera, in order to convey the impression of an ancient fresco. These colour sketches and a small number of drawings are all that remains of the fresco, which was completely destroyed by a bomb during the Second World War.
