A set of vermeil plates from the famous Orlov Service, commissioned by Tsarina Catherine II. in Paris. The above plates belong to the first manufacturing run, designed and made by Roettiers. The French hallmarks were subsequently ground away and replaced with Russian inventory marks. Comprising more than 2000 individual items, the silver service was a present form Tsarina Catherine II. to her favourite, Count Grigori Orlov. After his death, the service was again purchased from his heirs and returned to the imperial collection.
