A very rare presentation ring of the Tsarina. Hechelmüller, originally from Schaffhausen in Switzerland, is documented as having been working as a jeweller in St. Petersburg between 1780-1797. He had an active interest in geology and stone cutting techniques; in 1797/1798, he presented the Imperial Academy of Sciences at St Petersburg with several labradorite samples. As early as 1790, a certain William Lolly offered a granite sample discovered by Hechelmüller for sale in a St Petersburg newspaper. ("..vom Juwelier entdeckte ... Granit Masse, unter dem Namen eines Russian Labrador-Muttersteines für 1000 Rubel an und sagte von derselben, daß die Matrix mit mannigfaltigen Farben ins Rothe spiele, auch nur etwas poliert, tigerbunt und aschgrau erscheine..").
