China, c. 190 x 124 cm, mid-18th century, silk embroidery with a large amount of appliqué gold threads on a cotton ground, the surrounding brocade border originates from another textile that was most probably older, at the upper end is a fabric border for mounting, the two peacocks in the image represent beauty and dignity in China, in the Qing Dynasty the symbol of the peacock was used for the second rank of civil officers, as a result of age there are slightly damaged areas such as minor signs of wear in the pattern, otherwise still in good condition.
