The bag of a medicine man, or ‘healer’, of the Asmat. A meshwork of twisted cords of vegetable fibres, held in a round shape by means of curved rattan staffs. A carrying strap is woven into the upper edge. A considerable amount of ‘magic material’ is attached to the outside of the net bag, which is supposed to help the Asmat medicine man to carry out his tasks: skulls, lower jaws and bones of small animals, as well as tails of wild boars and other animals. A rare object with traces of usage and minor age damage. L: 70 cm (in total), DM: 28 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Acquired by the consignor directly from the Papua of the Asmat subgroup of the Combais, near the Dairam River, in the northeastern hinterland of the Asmat territory. Austrian private collection.
