A old, oblong battle shield of the Mendi, from the southern highlands of New Guinea.
Carved in very hard, dark wood and decorated on the front: with a vertical, raised ridge, with two bands of geometric spikes and two semicircle reliefs at the centre. The surfaces of the reliefs are dyed red, black and white with earth colours. The back is smooth and black.
With a long holder made of turned plant fibres, in order to carry the shield over one shoulder. The carrying cord is attached to two small, round circles in relief on the front side of the shield (which results in an obvious eye symbol!). A beautiful, typical object from the highlands of Papua New Guinea. With good, old usage patina and only minor damage (small tears and some pieces broken off at the upper edge). First third of the 20th century; H: 135 cm, W: 42 cm. (ME)
Lit.: ‘Ozeanische Kunst’ by Anthony J. P. Meyer, ill. 339; ‘New Guinea Art’ by Marcia & John Friede, ill. 596.
