New Guinea, Upper Sepik: An old ‘Kundu’ hand drum.
An old, so-called hourglass drum of the Papua from the Upper Sepik River in New Guinea. The hourglass-shaped body of the drum is carved in brown wood and dyed black on the outside. In the lower third, the wooden body features a thick ring as decoration. The middle handle section is covered with light brown, shiny rattan wickerwork. The tense membrane of the drumhead consists of thin leather with three (originally four) glued, black resin knops. The drumhead is stretched and attached by means of a thick bulge made of vegetable strips and old fabric. The lower third of the drum is decorated with incised lines and dots. An unusually old piece with correspondingly thick, partly shiny, partly encrusted, old usage patina and minor age-related damage (an original repair with black tree resin in the area of the ornamental rings, and two small pieces broken off at the lower edge). Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries; H: c. 60 cm. (ME)
