In remote areas of Nepal there are still remnants of pre-Buddhist beliefs. This is the case of West Nepal, among the Magar, Gurung and other tribes: pure shamanism and animism, the belief that the world is ‘animated’ by spirits and deities, still exist here. This belief also includes protective deities in he t‘praying pose’, which are placed in, before or atop houses, near water springs and bridges, in order to ward off evil. The present protective deity from West Nepal, sitting upright and ‘praying’ on a round base, once used to stand in a house or in a domestic shrine, in order to protect the household. Carved from hard, heavy wood and coloured in white. A very impressive piece, with good, old patina. In excellent condition, no damage. First half of the 20th century; H: 96 cm. (ME)
