The wandering monks and preachers of the Persian and Sufi orders used such vessels to carry donated food or water. The shape of the ‘kashkul’ originates from cut apart (halved) sea coconuts, which were also willingly used as ‘kashkul’.
The present, complete and old ‘kashkul’ is made of iron and displays beautiful, engraved and etched decorations on its outer surface: above is a calm, ‘paradisal’ landscape with people, animals and plants. In the centre is an all-round band made of floral and leafy tendrils. On the underside of the iron beggar’s bowl four people are depicted sitting in a garden, two on top of each other, separated by a sort of ‘celestial ladder’. A very interesting object, with a round spout (for drinking) and an original carrying chain on three eyelets. Good condition, minor age-related damage (traces of rust). 19th century or earlier. H: 17 cm, L: 23 cm, W: 15 cm. (ME)
Provenance: German private collection.
