The Luena, native to the three-country crossroads of Angola, Zambia and Congo, are known for their masterful woodcarving, of which the present caryatid mortar of the Luena in Angola is a good example. Such mortars were used to grind medicinal plants and tobacco. Made of light-coloured, hard wood and executed in rich detail. Exquisite linear reliefs adorn both the two bands on the mortar and the standing woman with bent arms who carries the mortar on her head: her face, the helmet-like hairstyle and the typical tribal scarification marks to the temples and cheeks are all of the highest quality! With beautiful, shiny usage patina. A crack due to age on the back. First third of the 20th century; H: c. 30 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Collected by Portuguese Provincial Governor Raffael Lopez-Cardozo between 1920 and 1930; Westerdijk family collection, Holland; Belgian collection.
