Tribes: Mursi and Somali: two pieces of jewellery for cattle of the Mursi people, as well as a camel bell of the Somali people.1: A cattle necklace for especially beautiful cows (occasionally worn hanging also by women around the neck or above the head): made of braided leather bands. With decorations: two old warthog tusks covered in leather on iron coils on the left and right below and each attached to an iron ring. Additionally each with two forged iron rings, eight spirals and a bell. The Mursi cattle breeders in Southern Ethiopia adorn their ‘favourite cows’ with this neck jewellery. First third of the 20th century; L: c. 50 cm. 2: A similar cattle necklace of the Mursi, but in this case for especially beautiful bulls: made of braided leather strips, with a single hippopotamus tooth covered in leather. With this type - only a hippopotamus tooth as a pendant - cattle breeders of the Mursi adorn the ‘favourite bull’ of their herd. Both Mursi objects display very good, old usage patina and are in excellent, complete condition. Very rare! First third of the 20th century; L: c. 58 cm. 3: A camel bell of the Somali people, from East Ethiopia (Ogaden Desert). Carved from hard, reddish-brown wood. A beautiful piece with noticeable, old traces of usage (see both hanging holes above). Good sound and no damage. First half of the 20th century; h: 26 cm (with clapper), W: 22 cm. (ME)
