A round, tall prestige hat, called ‘botolo’, used by masters of ceremonies and rituals as well as by dignitaries of the Sengele, in western Congo. Densely woven from plant fibres into a stiff shape with four round levels, and with an embossed brass plate decorated with three rows of hallmarked knops on the front. These round metal plates are a sign of the wealth and prestige of a ‘botolo wearer’. When a master of ceremonies of the Sengele dies, his successor inherits his predecessor’s hat. An old specimen with heavy patina (probably due to the its being stored in a smoky hut). Good condition, minor age damage (small cracks to the old brass plate). First third of the 20th century; H: 34 cm. DM: 19th cm (the Sengele hat below), 16 cm (brass plate). (ME)
Provenance: Brussels collection.
Lit.: ‘Parures de Tete’ by Anne van Cutsem & Mauro Magliani, ill. 64.
