Jonga, Dem. Rep. of Congo: A rare mask of the Jonga.
The Jonga are a small ethnic group in central Congo. They live to the south of the Mbole. Very few of their masks and sculptures are known today. The present mask made of lightweight, light-coloured wood displays the typical stylistic features of the Jonga. The extremely slanted slit eyes are characteristic of Jonga style. The nose and eyebrows are prominently executed in relief, in the same dark brown colour as the broad outer edge of the mask’s face. The serious, sensitively composed face is divided into four, chromatically differentiated surfaces, diagonally dyed white (with kaolin) and red (redwood powder). A line of bulging scarification marks with short scratched signs runs vertically across the forehead. A object with very good patina as a result of protracted use. Two small repairs to the crown and chin (cracks glued). An extremely rare mask! First half of the 20th century; H: 24 cm. (ME)
Provenance: French private collection.
Lit.: ‘The Tribal Arts of Africa’ by Jean-Baptiste Bacquart, p. 147, ill. C; ‘Encyclopedia of African Art and Culture’ by K.-F. Schädler, p. 310.
