A characteristic mask of the Pende people in western Congo. Type: ‘Mbuya’. From the grand, theatrical mask dances of the Pende people. With all important stylistic features: high, bulging forehead with vertical scarification mark, continuous eyebrow arches, drooping eyelids, small protruding ears, a short upturned nose, and the open mouth with two carved rows of teeth above a pointed chin. Carved from hard, brown wood, coloured in dark, reddish brown, black and white. The original ‘hairstyle’ consists of an old fabric made of raffia palm fibres. A piece with perfect style, very old usage patina and only small, age-related damage (to the hairstyle, a small fracture on the chin). Between the end of the 19th and the first third of the 20th century; H: 25 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian private collection.
Lit.: ‘Die Kunst des schwarzen Afrika’ by Kerchache, Paudrat, Stephan, ill. 768 et passim.
