Jimini, Ivory Coast: A mask with large buffalo horns.
The Jimini are relatives of the Senufo people in Ivory Coast. Their artistic style is influenced by their neighbours, the Senufo, Baule and Kulango, and yet it has recognisable independent features. The present Jimini mask is made of hard wood and dyed black on the front. It features the large buffalo horns and protruding animal ears that are typical of the carvings of the Jimini tribe. The otherwise ‘human’ mask face displays accentuated large, hatched eyebrows in relief above horizontal slit eyes, a prominent hook nose, a characteristically small, hemispheric protruding mouth and scarification marks on the forehead, temples and cheeks. The elements protruding from both sides of the cheeks are reminiscent of the ‘wing’ and ‘leg’ projections of the well-known ‘kpelie masks’ of the Senufo people. No age-related damage. Rare! First half of the 20th century; H: 38 cm. (ME)
