Senufo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali: A heddle pulley with the head of a ‘Calao bird’.
A heddle pulley made of light-coloured wood and dyed black. Attached to a thickened neck is the head of a ‘Calao bird’ (hornbill), a ‘sacred animal’ of the Senufo people. A piece with good usage patina. The heddle, which is also worn, is available, whilst the axis is missing. First half of the 20th century; H: 16 cm. (ME)
