Lobi, Burkina Faso: A large, male ancestor figure.
Whilst the smaller ‘bateba figures’ of the Lobi serve as temporary ‘abodes’ for invisible spirits (cf. cat. no 15 and 17), large-sized figures, such as the present one, represent the ancestors of the Lobi. The present male ancestor figure consists of hard, heavy, brown wood. The sculpture has two arms: its left arm is held tight to the body, its right arm is of larger size and freely stretched out to one side. This gesture signifies that the ancestor depicted here is calling other ancestors in order to help an as yet ‘unfinished ancestor’. Overall a carefully executed sculpture, with partly shiny patina and visible traces of former sacrificial offerings. A tear to the high crested coiffure, otherwise no age damage. First half of the 20th century; H: 108 cm. (ME)
