A beautiful, large and old mask, originally worn on the head. Made of hard, heavy wood, decorated with lines in relief and partly covered with cut brass sheet metal. At the top of the head sits a small chameleon. The mask depicts a heavily stylised ape (‘n’gon’) or a hyena (‘suruku’). A piece with excellent old usage patina (on the outside, on the inside as well as on the fastening eyelets!). An old original repair to the legs of the chameleon (glued). Otherwise in excellent condition, no damage! First half of the 20th century; H: 23 cm, L: 56 cm. (ME)
