A mask of the Bambara, depicting a hyena, called ‘suruku’. This mask type, with full body costume, takes care of the male initiates of the ‘Korè’ association, while the elders introduce them to the rites and traditions of their tribe in the ‘bush’. The present ‘suruku mask’ is especially beautiful and simply abstract. It consists of very hard, light brown wood of dark brown colour and displays a concave face with long, open snout and small tongue. The top of the head is decorated with a line of diagonal notches. An extraordinary object with excellent patina on the outside as well as on the inside, with noticeable, old traces of usage (see the fastening eyelets on the back rim of the mask!). In excellent condition, no damage Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century; H: 28 cm. (ME)
