Nicolas Baudesson - a pair (2)

(Troyes 1611–1680 Paris)
Two bouquets of flowers in crystal vases,
oil on canvas, each 73.5 x 58 cm, framed (2)

Baudesson, who lived in Paris and for a long time in Rome, was celebrated as the best flower painter of his time (Benezit: “Le meilleur peintre de fleurs de l‘epoque”). He lived long enough to witness both schools of French still life painting in the 17th century: the first current of still life painting, inspired particularly by Flanders and the Netherlands, which above all focused on the meticulous, perfect replication of nature in the style of de Heem; and, in the second half of the century, the Italian influenced, grand theatrical decorative manner of opulent still life, of which Jean Baptiste Monnoyer is the best known representative. Baudesson’s oeuvre is an excellent example of the transition period in the middle of the century. Despite being composed with clearly decorative intention, the present pair of paintings shows an almost frugal, balanced concentration on a few detailed, magnificently executed flowers, according to a stylistic feature of the first half of the century. Baudesson was a pupil of Jacques Linard.
