Gaspare Diziani

Gaspare Diziani - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Belluno 1689 – 1767 Venice)
An Allegory of Love with putti,
oil on canvas, 84.5 x 214 cm, framed

The present painting is a typical work of the brilliantly gifted Venetian painter Gaspare Diziani. It was probably executed as decoration for a building in Venice or Veneto. It is linked to two similar friezes depicting ‘Venus, Cupid and Bacchus’, and ‘Venus, Cupid and Hercules’ respectively (Vittorio Cini Collection, Venice) (see A. P. Zugni Tauro, Gaspare Diziani, Venice 1971, p. 96, panels 248-249) These, in turn, are linked to a series of drawings depicting putti in the Museum Correr, Venice (see A. Dorigato, in: T. Pignatti, Disegni antichi del Museo Correr di Venezia, II, Vicenza 1981, p. 31–33, cat. no. 244–247) and in a private collection, Florence (A. Bettagno, Le dessin vénitien au XVIIIe siècle, Vicenza 1971, p. 39, no. 45). The influence of Sebastiano Ricci is also visible in the present picture. It can be dated to the artist’s late period, probably the 1750s.

We are grateful to Professor Bernard Aikema, who examined the painting in the original, for confirming the attribution.
