Gualterus Gysaerts

The flower painter Gualterus Gysaerts, from 1670/71 onwards a master craftsman at the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp, joined the Mechelen Franciscan monastry in 1674. He was a cousin of David Teniers II, who occasionally painted the figures in his still lifes. The Franciscan friar depicted here, Franciscus Rodius, was one of the so-called Martyrs of Gorkum. Along with many of his spiritual brothers, he was murdered by the rebel group of the ‘Geuzen’ in Gorkum in 1572.
