A 17th century mining Instrument
signed “Christoff Jüngling Me fecit Anno 1673.”, engraved silver compass in square brass and wood housing, the compass with blued steel needle, 360 degree scales and engraved compass directions, folding half circle with pointer on 360 degree scale (alidade missing), bottom with tripod adjustment. Size c. 15,4 x 15,4 cm. (WU).
Von Christoff Jüngling sind weder Lebensdaten noch Schaffensort überliefert. Das Instrument ist aber sicher deutsch und es liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass Jüngling in Sachsen aktiv war. Durch die ungewöhnliche Konstruktion konnte das Instrument bei Montage von Aufhängehaken anstatt eines Diopters wohl auch als Hängekompass (Grubenkompass) benutzt werden.
