Inscribed on the reverse: Spanish Apartment, bedroom, Augustinerstrasse, with a paper label inscribed with inventory number 167.
Provenance:
according to the inscription formerly in the palace of Archduke Frederick, Vienna (today’s Albertina).
Between 1985 and 1897, the archduke installed the so-called Spanish Apartment for his sister, Queen Maria Christina of Spain. The present painting, which used to be attributed to Angelika Kauffmann, was given to Andries Cornelis Lens by Bettina Baumgärtel, Düsseldorf, on the basis of a colour photograph.
