A large bronze fang ding incense burner with lid
China, late Ming/early Qing dynasty, 17th/18th century.
Cast four-character seal mark “Xuande nian zhi” at the bottom. Rectangular body on four cylindrical legs, with vertical flanges along the corner edges, through the central sides and on the legs. On all sides of the body, taotie masks on leiwen ground, above which a decorative band with alternating swastikas and suns (?). The latter also on the legs together with lancet shaped decorative element. The solid cast marginal handles protrude slightly outwards and tilt upwards. The lid in openwork floral tendril decorations and with a fo-dog as finial. H: 41.5 cm. (BA)
Minor casting mistake to the upper edge of the vessel near one handle. Crack and probable) restoration to one corner of the lid.
