A figure of a luohan
China, Qing dynasty, 18th century.
Finely carved, caramel-coloured, opaque soapstone. With Indian features, wavy eyelids, prominent nose and full lips, finely engraved beard, the shaved head of a monk and the elongated earlobes of a Buddhist saint, the luohan meditates seated in lotus position, his eyes closed, his right hand in bumisparsha mudra, the left in his lap. Robes and cloak with finely engraved fretwork border, the cloak hanging in heavy folds over the back. On the base are the characters “Qing yu”, short for “Da Qing yu zhi”, i.e. ‘Made for the use of the emperor of the Great Qing Dynasty’. H: 7.3 cm (BA)
