This delicate oval probably represents a study for the still life located in the upper left corner of the composition for the celebrated painting, Femme lisant, executed in 1916. It was exhibited on several occasions and is also known by the titles, Jeanne dans l’atelier and La lecture.
According to Severini, the painting was the first to be acquired by Léonce Rosenberg in autumn/winter, 1916, on the occasion of his first visit to the painter’s studio on Boulevard St. Jacques.
In this study, too, the compositional balance results from the interplay of carefully assembled pictorial elements, drawn from real life. There is another extant work that displays the same characteristics as the present composition, I tulipani, which is published in the catalogue raisonné of Gino Severini’s works, edited by Daniela Fonti, no. 275, p. 255.
