Domenico Quaglio
(Hohenschwang/Munich 1786- 1837) "St. Donato in Murano bey Venice, 1829", titled, monogrammed D. Qu., inscribed with color specifications, pencil on paper, 36,5 x 48,5 cm, Trost, WVZ 91, mounted, framed, (Sch)
Literature:
The drawing is published and illustrated in: Brigitte Trost, Domenico Quaglio: 1787-1837; Monographie und Werksverzeichnis, Munich 1973, Cat. 91. Comp. The lithograph by Moore bei Day & Haghe, Trost LN 58 with Ill. The lithograph comes with the drawing.
In 1829 Quaglio travelled with Raphael Winter to Italy in order to make drawings for the intended collection of panoramic views "The Ecclesiastical Architectur of Italy" of the editor and architecture researcher Henry Gally Knight in London. The work with the lithographs mostly executed by G. Moore appeared only in 1843. Compare Brigitte Trost p. 189 and p. 359 and the timetable, where Quaglio indicated day, date and place of his excursions in a diary. 215 works are supposed to have been made. It is not known whether he sent all of the works to London. The present drawing is certainly related with the lithographic views and may have also served as a preliminary drawing for a painting.
