Provenance:
from the estate of film director Ernst Marischka (1893-1963);
by inheritance to an Austrian private collection
Jan Griffier, a student of Roeland Roghman and Jan Looten, specialised in the depiction of fantastical Rhine and Moselle landscapes. These subjects were inspired by the works of Herman Saftleven. Griffier in turn would become a model for German painters of the 18th century, such as Christian Georg Schütz I.
