Robert van den Hoecke
(Antwerp 1622–1668 Bergues)
A winter landscape with a town and a frozen lake,
oil on panel, 30 x 55.5 cm, framed
We are grateful to Dr. Luuk Pijl, who identified the present painting as a work by Robert van den Hoecke. A written certificate (January 2014) is available.
The painter and architect Robert van den Hoecke was the son of the Antwerp painter Gaspar van den Hoecke. In 1644/45 he became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. He specialised in small landscapes mostly featuring low horizons and numerous tiny figures at an early period. In the Illustrated Dictionary of 17th-Century Flemish Painters: “His style may be characterized by meticulous draftsmanship, fine brushwork and bright tonalities [...]” ( J. de Maere and M. Wabbes, Brussels, 1994). In his certificate, Luuk Pijl points out that some thirty paintings by Robert van den Hoecke are conserved in public museums of which only two are dated – a Winter Landscape in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (1649), and a Military Camp in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dunkerque. The present painting is more closely related to the work in Dunkerque, so that it probably also dates from the 1660s.
