Longhi produced paintings that depicted scenes of everyday life, peasant scenes, and interiors depicting noble life. Longhi´s work was immensely popular in his day; he was celebrated as an outstanding imitator of nature. Venetian 18th century society constantly looked to its past greatness and contemporary art was almost entirely allegorical; his scenes of 18th-century life were therefore a novelty and the present portrait, with its sense of the “real”, is typical of his oeuvre. It is presumed that Pietro Longhi began his studies under Antonio Balestra, through whom he came into contact with Bolognese artists such as Giuseppe Maria Crespi. However, information regarding his life is rare before his documented marriage in 1732. His first independent commissions were altarpieces, though he became successful with his aforementioned genre paintings.
